Do you understand your dog?
Owners of dogs know that dogs feel the mood and wishes of the owner very sensitively, and can understand the owner's words. But, unfortunately, not all owners understand the language of their dogs.
Dogs, like their wild ancestors, are social animals. And although most of them now live in isolation of the owner's house, there are a lot of aspects in their behaviour, which refer to communication of animals in the pack. In the pack we can identify types of behaviour, which require exchange of information among individuals, for example, physical, sexual, parental, getting food, etc. In the process of communication animals use olfactory signals, postures, special style of movements, and various sounds.
The dog always protects the area, where it lives: apartment, cottage, etc. and going for a walk, always marks its way by urine and excrement.
It is proved that dogs can determine not only sex by this mark but also age, and recognize a familiar dog.
The importance of poses and movements is most vividly revealed when two dogs meet each other. There can be several types of meeting. At first, dogs stop at a distance and look at each other. Then slowly come to each other. In so doing, neck and back muscles are stretched, the tail is raised above, eyes are open wide, ears stand on end. Dogs walk slowly circles - head to tail, and sniff each other around. After sniffing, dogs equal in strength may move away and mark the next bush, and then run away slowly with dignity.
Dog's facial expression clearly shows intentions of the animal and its emotional state. Realizing the meaning of dog's conduct, the owner can easily assess its condition and choose the type of communication suitable to the occasion. You must remember that communication with other dogs is as necessary for your dog's happy life, as communication with human beings, so don't deprive it of contacts with other dogs while walking. Prohibition of sniffing other dogs' marks can be compared with an invitation to an art gallery blindfolded.
